No Treble this year however it was still a record breaking season for the English champions of 2000, Manchester United. They set a Premiership record of 97 goals and a record 11 consecutive victories.

Their final winning margin of 18 points may never be bettered and beat Everton's previous record 13 point lead in 1985. It was the sixth league title success in 8 years and the most emphatic as United crushed all domestic opposition. United had more shots on target and made more passes than any other team in the Premiership.Of every shot taken by a United player one fifth resulted in a goal.

The cost of such attacking play however was that the number of goals conceded 45, was the highest of any Premiership champions. In November 1999 United became the first British team to win the Intercontinental World Club Cup beating Palmeiras 1-0 in Tokyo.Roy Keane won both PFA Player and Writers Player of the Year and Alex Ferguson won Premiership Manager of the Year for the fifth time.

On the downside the World Club Tournament in Brazil was a huge flop and the row over United's absence from the FA Cup dragged on for many months.By far the biggest disappointment was United losing their crownas Champions of Europe to Real Madrid, who after beating United 3-2 eventually went on to win the trophy.

Off the pitch Manchester United became the world's first sporting organisation to be be valued at £1 Billion and long-time shirt sponsers Sharp where replaced by Vodafone.Extension work at Old Trafford was carried out as the stadium held crowds of over 60,000 for the first time since 1975.
